Description: The complement pathway is an important host defense system that contributes to both innate and acquired immunity. There are three pathways of complement activation: the classical pathway, lectin pathway and alternative pathway. Complement protein Factor I is a key serine protease that modulates the complement cascade by regulating the levels of C3 convertases. It circulates in plasma as a heavily N-glycosylated heterodimer made up of two disulfide linked chains, each carrying three N-linked oligosaccharide chains that may have both structural and functional roles in the interactions with the natural substrate and the cofactor during catalysis. Factor I is a serine protease with a high degree of specificity for C3b and C4b. It requires protein cofactors for cleavage of these complement proteins; Factor H, CR1 or MCP are required for C3b cleavage, and C4bp or CR1 are required for C4b cleavage.

Description: The procedure for determining dietary fibre exposes the sample to a series of enzymatic digestions that simulate the real digestive process which takes place in the human or animal digestive tract, calculating the undigested residue remaining at the end of the analysis. Generally dietary fibre analysis is carried out on foods intended for human consumption whereas raw fibre analysis is carried out on animal feeds or on raw materials of vegetable origin, eg. cereals. The GDE performs enzymatic digestion, a delicate phase where samples are immersed in a thermostatic water bath and stirred. Continuous and constant sample mixing is necessary in order to prevent the sample from overheating. The unit consists of an immersion thermostat, a transparent polycarbonate tank and a VELP 6-place magnetic stirrer to ensure excellent thermoregulation and precision. The use of deionised water is recommended as it eliminates any possible cause of limescale.

Description: Compact recirculating chiller with powerful 400 W cooling capacity, designed for simple cooling tasks down to –10 °C. The RC 2 lite is the perfect peripheral device for the cooling of rotary evaporators, reflux condensers or as a cooling source for devices that dissipate heat with the help of a heat exchanger (double-walled grinding containers, cooled incubators, laboratory reactors, cooling coils). The easily accessible and easy-to-clean mesh filter along with low filling volume of just one litre enables fast cooling. Thanks to the natural refrigerant R290, the RC 2 lite is remarkably environmentally friendly.

Description: Angiopoietin-like protein 3 (Angptl3) functions as a potent lipoprotein lipase inhibitor and is an important component of plasma triglyceride homeostasis. Angptl3 also plays a role in adipose formation and angiogenesis through its interaction with integrin ?v)beta(3). It is secreted by the liver and is functionally defined by the C-terminal fibrinogen (FBN)-like domain and an N-terminal coiled-coil domain. Angptl3 regulates circulating triglyceride levels during different nutritional states thereby mediating the feeding/fasting cycle. A deficiency of Angptl3 results in abnormally low lipid levels, and a repression of the protein may be protective against atherosclerosis. Angptl3 may also play an important role in hyperlipidemia in diabetes.

Description: The family of guanylin regulatory peptides, including guanylin and uroguanylin, are strongly expressed in intestinal mucosa and regulate intestinal fluid secretion during digestion. Guanylins are also involved in acid neutralization and the regulation of membrane-bound guanylate cyclase Signalling molecules. Guanylin and uroguanylin are secreted primarily in the stomach, intestine, and colon. Guanylin is also detected in plasma. Guanylin is an endogenous activator of intestinal guanylate cyclase. It stimulates intestinal guanylate cyclase through the same receptor binding region as the heat-stable enterotoxins. Gut enterochromaffin cells synthesize guanylin to be a prohormone of 115 amino acids which is then is processed to the molecular form of 94 amino acids. This 10 kDa form is found circulating in the blood.

Description: This gene encodes coagulation factor VIII, which participates in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation; factor VIII is a cofactor for factor IXa which, in the presence of Ca+2 and phospholipids, converts factor X to the activated form Xa. This gene produces two alternatively spliced transcripts. Transcript variant 1 encodes a large glycoprotein, isoform a, which circulates in plasma and associates with von Willebrand factor in a noncovalent complex. This protein undergoes multiple cleavage events. Transcript variant 2 encodes a putative small protein, isoform b, which consists primarily of the phospholipid binding domain of factor VIIIc. This binding domain is essential for coagulant activity. Defects in this gene results in hemophilia A, a common recessive X-linked coagulation disorder. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008].

Description: Hephaestin is a single-pass type I membrane protein that belongs to the multicopper oxidase family of proteins. Hephaestin, a copper-dependant ferroxidase protein, is crucial for iron exiting intestinal enterocytes into the circulation. It mediates the movement of iron across the basolateral membrane in conjunction with ferroportin 1. This is an important link between iron and copper metabolism in mammalian systems, as copper deficiency leads to reduced hephaestin and reduced iron absorption resulting in anemia. Hephaestin can bind six copper ions per monomer and is regulated by the homeobox transcription factor CDX2. Increased levels of iron leads to an increase in CDX2 expression and thus Hephaestin. Hephaestin is primarily detected in the intestine, but is also expressed in colon, breast, bone trabecural cells and fibroblasts.
