Description: The 2'- 5'- oligoadenylate synthetase (OAS) family is comprised of four members: OAS1, OAS2, OAS3 and OASL. These proteins are induced by interferons and function to convert ATP into 2'- 5'- linked oligomers of adenosine in the presence of double-stranded RNA and magnesium ions. Copper, iron and zinc ions strongly inhibit the OAS enzymatic activity, while manganese ions can replace magnesium ions as an activator. The OAS family plays a significant role in the inhibition of cellular protein synthesis, apoptosis and growth, and its members are important factors in viral infection resistance. OAS3, also referred to as p100, contains three adjacent OAS1-like domains and maps to the human chromosome 12q24.2

Description: Concanavalin A (Con A) agarose consists of Con A coupled to 6% agarose by the cyanogen bromide method. Con A is a tetrameric metalloprotein lectin isolated from Canavalia ensiformis (jack bean). It is used for the purification of glycoproteins, polysaccharides and glycolipids as it binds molecules containing α-D-mannopyranosyl, α-D-glucopyranosyl and sterically related residues. It has also be used in other application areas including purification of enzyme-antibody conjugates, purification of IgM and separation of membrane vesicles. As stated above, it is a metalloprotein and to maintain its binding characteristics the presence of both Mn²⁺ and Ca²⁺ is essential. Each subunit of Con A utilises one calcium and one manganese ion and these cations can be removed under acidic conditions abolishing the carbohydrate-binding activity.

Description: Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS). SOD catalyzes the dismutation reaction of superoxide radical anion (O2-) to hydrogen peroxide, which is then catalyzed to innocuous O2 and H2O by glutathione peroxidase and catalase. Several classes of SOD have been identified. These include intracellular copper, zinc SOD (Cu, Zn-SOD/SOD-1), mitochondrial manganese SOD (Mn-SOD/SOD-2) and extracellular Cu, Zn-SOD (EC-SOD/SOD-3). SOD1 is found in all eukaryotic species as a homodimeric 32 kDa enzyme containing one each of Cu and Zn ion per subunit. The manganese containing 80 kDa tetrameric enzyme SOD2, is located in the mitochondrial matrix in close proximity to a primary endogenous source of superoxide, the mitochondrial respiratory chain. SOD3 is a heparin-binding multimer of disulfide-linked dimers, primarily expressed in human lungs, vessel walls and airways. SOD4 is a copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase (CCS), which specifically delivers Cu to copper/zinc superoxide dismutase. CCS may activate copper/zinc superoxide dismutase through direct insertion of the Cu cofactor.

Description: HEAB is a 425 amino acid nuclear protein that belongs to the Clp1 family. Utilising magnesium, manganese or nickel as cofactors, HEAB participates in the phosphorylation of the 5'-hydroxyl groups of double- and single- stranded RNA and DNA. HEAB is a member of the tRNA splicing endonuclease complex, in conjunction with TSEN2, TSEN15, TSEN34 and TSEN54, and is also a member of the pre-mRNA cleavage complex II. The gene encoding HEAB maps to human chromosome 11q12.1 and mouse chromosome 2 D; mutations to this gene may lead to a reduced pre-mRNA cleavage activity. HEAB exists as two isoforms due to alternative splicing events.

Description: GBGT1 is a 347 amino acid single-pass type II membrane protein that belongs to the glycosyltransferase 6 family. Localizing to the golgi apparatus membrane, GBGT1 is widely expressed, with high levels found in placenta, ovary and peripheral blood leukocyte, and lower levels expressed in liver, thymus and testis. GBGT1 utilizes manganese as a cofactor, and assists in the addition of N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) in alpha-1,3-linkage to various substrates, resulting in the formation of glycolipids. Glycolipids are present in most eukaryotic cells and may assist in the adherence of certain pathogens. Existing as two alternatively spliced isoforms, the gene encoding GBGT1 maps to human chromosome 9q34.2 and mouse chromosome 2 A3.
