Description: The Ovo family of zinc-finger transcription factors encode evolutionarily conserved genes including those from Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster, mouse and human. Members of the Ovo family include Ovol1 and Ovol2. Ovol1 acts as a transcriptional repressor by interacting with key developmental Signalling pathways such as Wnt and TGF-/BMP. Specifically, Ovol1 represses c-Myc and Id2 genes and establishes a balance between proliferation and differentiation of progenitor cells. Deletion of Ovol1 in mice leads to germ cell degeneration and defective sperm production in adult males. Ovol1 has also been shown to repress itself as well as Ovol2, which is thought to regulate neural development and vascular angiogenesis during embryogenesis.

Description: Fatty acid-binding proteins, designated FABPs, are a family of homologous cytoplasmic proteins that are expressed in a highly tissue-specific manner and play an integral role in the balance between lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. FABPs mediate fatty acid (FA) and/or hydrophobic ligand uptake, transport and targeting within their respective tissues. The mechanisms underlying these actions can give rise to both passive diffusional uptake and protein-mediated transmembrane transport of FAs. FABPs are expressed in adipocytes (A-FABP), brain (B-FABP), epidermis (E-FABP, also designated psoriasis-associated FABP or PA-FABP), muscle and heart (H-FABP, also designated mammary-derived growth inhibitor or MDGI), intestine (I-FABP), liver (L-FABP), myelin (M-FABP) and testis (T-FABP). MDGI is highly expressed in the myocardium, skeletal and smooth muscle fibers, lipid and/or steroid synthesizing cells and terminally differentiated epithelia of the respiratory, intestinal and urogenital tracts.

Description: Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are members of a large family of zinc metalloenzymes responsible for catalyzing the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. CAs show extensive diversity in their distribution and subcellular localization. They are involved in a variety of biological processes, including calcification, bone resorption, respiration, acid-base balance and the formation of aqueous humor, saliva, gastric juice and cerebrospinal fluid. CA XI, also referred to as carbonic anhydrase-related protein 11 precursor (CA-RP XI) or carbonic anhydrase-related protein 2 (CA-RP II), is a member of the carbonic anhydrase family that lacks two of the three Zn-binding motifs essential for carbonic anhydrase activity. For this reason, CA XI does not exhibit catalytic activity. It is expressed primarily in brain but is also found in spinal cord and thyroid. CA XI may play a role in brain development.Tissue specificity:Expressed abundantly in the brain with moderate expression also present in spinal cord and thyroid.

Description: Adipogenesis, the process of transforming pre-adipocytes into mature fat cells, is of particular interest due to the role adipocytes play in obesity and type II diabetes. Adipocytes have been shown to affect a variety of functions, including hemostasis, angiogenesis and energy balance, by secreting hormones and bioactive peptides. The FNDC3B protein, also designated FAD104 (factor for adipocyte differentiation 104) or HCV NS5A-binding protein 37, is expressed during early adipogenesis. Belonging to the FNDC3 family of proteins, FNDC3B is a 1,204 amino acid protein that contains nine fibronectin type-III domains. FNDC3B-deficient mice die within one day of birth, suggesting that FNDC3B is crucial for postpartum survival. Mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) with loss of FNDC3B function displayed a reduction in stress fiber formation, indicating a role for FNDC3B in cell proliferation, adhesion, spreading and migration.
